Level 1

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Level 1 is designed for students who have had little exposure to the English language. In this level, students will be focusing on being able to create language at the sentence level. They will learn to ask and answer simple present, past, and future time questions. They will learn basic vocabulary and study topics related to every day habits and experiences. They will learn to write simple paragraphs and fill out forms requiring personal information. At the completion of this level, students will feel confident holding short conversations about every day topics such as weather, time, clothing, and transportation, be able to read simple stories, write simple sentences with correct punctuation and capitalization, have a solid understanding of the English alphabet, be able to use English conventions for numbers in a variety of contexts, and be able to use language to have basic needs met in an English-only environment.

Level 2

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Level 2 is designed for students who are able to handle basic communicative tasks in uncomplicated social or survival situations. At this level, students are able to create sentence-level speech and writing using verbs in simple present, past and future. They learn present and past progressive and other basic grammar concepts to increase the complexity of the ideas they are able to express. They begin to write at the paragraph-level and focus on participating in short conversations about familiar topics.

Level 3

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Level 3 is designed for students who can use English adequately to complete simple, high-frequency tasks and are now ready to expand their communicative skills in less-familiar social contexts. Students expand their understanding of basic grammar concepts to add complexity to their speech and writing. They read, write, speak, and listen about topics related to general life experiences and practice expressing and supporting personal opinions. They learn to write simple narrative compositions and well-organized informative paragraphs.

Level 4

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Level 4 is designed for students who have attained sufficient English proficiency to function adequately in social and survival contexts and are now ready to begin refining those skills for use in academic or professional applications. In Level 4, students will build upon previously learned skills to create more sophisticated speech and writing. They learn the perfect tenses and study nouns, pronouns, modals, and adjectives in greater depth. They increase the variety of sentence structures they use in writing. They learn to extend conversations by telling anecdotal stories and begin to prepare for academic success by reading, writing, speaking about, and listening to materials on topics beyond their everyday experiences. They begin to write simple essays with thesis statements, learn to incorporate simple research into their writing and speech, and develop effective oral presentations on academic topics. They work to improve pronunciation through focusing on stress and intonation patterns at the sentence level.

Level 5

GENERAL OVERVIEW
Level 5 is designed for students who can communicate effectively in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar contexts and are prepared to begin working on advanced level tasks. In this level, students build upon previous grammar concepts to create more sophisticated and complex speech and writing. They practice identifying and correcting grammar errors in their own writing and speech. They learn about and discuss academic topics and learn to politely discuss opinions on divisive issues. They write a variety of 5-paragraph essays and learn conventions for writing to persuade, show cause/effect, and inform. They focus on identifying main ideas and important details in lectures, reports, and essays on unfamiliar topics. They develop strategies for expanding their vocabulary and improve their pronunciation and presentation skills.
